#4 thing that God hates: a heart that devises wicked schemes. This doesn’t say that “carries out wicked schemes”. It says “devises”. That means to plan. God hates just the plotting and planning of something wicked…you don’t even have to actually follow through with it. In Matthew 15 Jesus is trying to explain to the Pharisees and the teachers of the law that it is not what is going into the mouth that causes them to be unclean…it is what comes out of the mouth (which comes from the heart). Matt 15:8-11 NIV - " 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.' " Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.' " 18-19 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander." We think that as long as we are not actively sinning than we are ok…but God knows our hearts. He hates the wicked, evil things that we plan in our minds. We must let the Holy Spirit control our minds and help us to have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5)
